Troy auto repair business founded in 2004 returns as a mobile service with on-site fleet maintenance and pickup and delivery for major repairs
TROY, OH, UNITED STATES, October 29, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Car Medic LLC, an auto repair business founded in 2004 by ASE Master Certified technician John Rankin, has reopened as a mobile repair service after a closure of about two years. The business, which previously operated as a traditional repair shop, resumed operations in July 2026 and now performs repairs and maintenance at customers’ homes, workplaces and parking lots across 13 Miami Valley communities. The reopened business also provides on-site service for commercial fleets and offers pickup and delivery to an offsite repair facility for major repairs and for days when weather makes driveway work unsafe.
The Car Medic operates from Troy and serves communities in Miami, Montgomery, Greene, Clark and Warren counties: Troy, Tipp City, Pleasant Hill, Covington, West Milton, New Carlisle, Huber Heights, Vandalia, Fairborn, Beavercreek, Kettering, Centerville and Springboro. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
From Repair Shop to Mobile Service
Since July, the business has operated without a customer-facing shop. A service van equipped with tools and parts travels to the vehicle, and the repair is completed where the vehicle is parked. The model removes the usual steps of a shop visit: arranging a tow, finding a ride, waiting at the facility or going without a vehicle for days.
Calls and texts are answered by Rankin, who also performs the repair work. There is no dispatcher or service writer between the customer and the technician.
“When people call, they are talking to the person who is going to work on the car,” Rankin said. “That has not changed since 2004. What changed is where the work happens. Running a shop showed me how much of a repair is really the trip: getting the car there, getting the customer home, and doing it all again at pickup. Coming back as a mobile service takes most of that out of the customer’s day.”
“With over 40 years of experience, I have learned to travel light and bring what is needed for each repair,” Rankin said. “That reduces the need for expensive vehicles, high insurance costs and high fuel costs, and it allows us to keep costs low.”
What the Reopening Includes
Residential services include brake repair, engine diagnostics and repair, air conditioning and heating repair, cooling system repair, battery and alternator replacement, jump starts, tune-ups, filter replacement, timing belt and serpentine belt replacement, CV and drive axle repair, steering and suspension repair, and pre-purchase inspections of used vehicles.
The reopening adds two services. The first is commercial fleet service. The Car Medic performs maintenance and repairs at a business’s lot, yard or job site on cars, SUVs, pickups, cargo vans, box trucks and heavy-duty trucks. Fleet work includes oil changes, brakes, batteries, filters, belts, cooling system and air conditioning service, steering and suspension, and check engine light diagnostics. The company tracks what each vehicle is due for based on mileage and service history, notifies the business ahead of scheduled maintenance, and gives fleet clients priority scheduling when a vehicle breaks down.
“A lot of the small businesses around here run three, five or ten vehicles, and every one of them is tied to a crew and a schedule,” Rankin said. “When a van has to go to a shop, somebody has to drive it there, somebody has to pick that person up, and then the whole process happens again when it is done. Doing the work in their lot takes those trips out of the day.”
The second is pickup and delivery for larger jobs. Most repairs are completed on site, but some work requires equipment, time or conditions a driveway cannot provide. For major repairs, or when weather makes outdoor work unsafe, The Car Medic collects the vehicle, completes the repair at an offsite facility and returns it. The option covers residential and fleet customers in the full service area.
Credentials and Terms of Service
Rankin holds ASE Master Certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, earned by passing all eight core tests, A1 through A8. He is also certified under Section 609 of the federal Clean Air Act, required to service vehicle air conditioning and handle refrigerant.
The Car Medic LLC is insured and licensed. Customers get an upfront quote, and any added work needs their approval first. Parts the company supplies and labor it performs are covered by a 12-month or 12,000-mile warranty. Same-day appointments are available for calls received before noon, subject to availability, and most other appointments are scheduled within 24 to 48 hours.
Industry Context
The reopening comes as vehicles on American roads keep aging. According to a May 2025 analysis by S&P Global Mobility, the average age of U.S. light vehicles reached a record 12.8 years in 2025, across 289 million vehicles in operation. The firm expects repair demand to rise as 2015 to 2019 models age out of factory warranty.
Mobile repair has limits. Some jobs need a lift or a controlled environment, and southwest Ohio weather often makes outdoor work unsafe. A single technician also has fixed daily capacity, so the company recommends booking ahead.
“There are repairs that belong in a shop, and I am not going to pretend otherwise,” Rankin said. “Having the offsite facility means I do not have to force a job into a driveway when it should not be done there. The goal is to do the work in the right place, tell the customer what I found, and tell them honestly what can wait and what cannot.”
